Since the Spanish language is being spoken in 43 countries, not including Spain, this shows how widely popular the Spanish language is. Foreign language courses are already being offered at different colleges and universities. Spanish training is always included in them. For many, the school systems have not met the needs of the Spanish language students with respect to the academic educational standards expected by the proactive people. This has resulted in a growing movement of people taking the Spanish education into their own hands. Learning Spanish at home continues to grow and to expand as more and more people realize the many benefits and advantages of studying Spanish at home.

Most folks, when they set out to study a new language, begin by enrolling in Spanish I at their local Junior College. This is not the way to begin. In fact, the formal learning about the language in a course at the JuCo is about 5 years away from where you are at if you’ve had no experience at acquiring the target language.

You begin by listening. You need this exposure to grow accustomed to the sounds of the language. You need this period of silence in which you listen, not produce, so you can bombard your brain with lots and lots of visual and auditory impressions in the new language you are seeking to understand and speak. You’ve got to learn “the music” of the language. You’ve got to experience comprehensible input.

The Clock Starts Ticking

Starting tomorrow morning, you’re going to practice English, Spanish, French or other foreign language. For the following 6 days, for 8 hours per day, you’ll work on grammar, pronunciation, watch videos and listen to audio materials. You’ll write short notes, grocery lists and play games in the target foreign language. All well and good – BUT – a week from today, is it really reasonable to think you’ll be fluent in English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Chinese or any other foreign language?

Of course not.

Could you learn a lot?

Yes.

The second largest problem that a Spanish language student faces is to develop his or her listening comprehension. If you are like most people studying Spanish, you can probably comprehend a good portion of what you read and are able to write at least a little bit in Spanish. But you get totally lost when it comes to understanding what a native Spanish speaker is saying during a regular conversation.
